The Mineral Area College (MAC) Horticulture Program is designed to provide students with the necessary education to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree at a University or obtain employment in the vast horticulture field upon completion of the Associates of Applied Sciences (AAS) degree. MAC has two AAS degree plans, Ornamental Horticulture-Greenhouse/Nursery/Landscape and Turfgrass Management. A one-year certificate plan is available in Ornamental Horticulture and Florist Shop Management. Along with course work students are expected to complete two 3 hour internships in their area of concentration. Beyond classroom instruction the department strives to take advantage of other campus resources such as, the two gutter connected greenhouses, a small woody plants nursery and a perennials display garden. The turfgrass management portion of the program manages and maintains the varsity baseball field for the athletic department as well. Students assist with campus horticulture maintenance in the spring and fall by planting, designing and maintaining landscape beds. Courses in Renewable Energy-biomass can also be taken through the horticulture department.
